Peace in the Park is an urban community festival at Golden Gate Park on August 23rd, 2014. Here's How the Peace in the Park Workshop Works:

Peace in the Park will feature many different speakers and activities and you may not have time to do it all! Our workshop is designed to introduce you to the different speakers so you can decide where to spend your time on the day of the event.

Each day, you’ll watch a new video and be introduced to a new speaker. You get to hear their story and you’ll have the opportunity to experience their peace expertise before the actual event. Connect with other participants and plan your schedule for the day of the event on August 23rd.

Workshop overview

  • Day 1 - The Peaceful Leader
    Jay Chodagam has spent the last two years as an instructor at Brahma Kumaris where he is known for leading groups in mindfulness meditation. He is a practitioner of Raja Yoga Meditation and believes in helping people cultivate happiness within their lives for a greater sense of purpose and success. In November of 2013, Jay gave a TEDx talk on “Being Before Doing” in Golden Gate Park. Jay has also been a presales leader in Business Intelligence for over seven years and he has 12 years of experience as a Subject Matter Expert in architecting Business Intelligence.
  • Day 2 - The Peaceful Neurosurgeon
    Dr. James Doty is the Founder and Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor, contributing the largest amount he has ever invested in a non-Tibetan cause. Dr. Doty is also an inventor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University’s School of Medicine. He specializes in complex spinal surgeries and the careful removal of brain tumors. Dr. Doty also sits on a number of boards, including the International Advisory Board of the Council of the Parliament of the World's Religions.
  • Day 3 - The Peaceful Psychologist
    Cassandra Vieten, Ph.D., is the President and CEO of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma, CA. As a scientist at the Mind-Body Medicine Research Group, Dr. Vieten’s research has focused on spirituality and health, using mindfulness-based approaches for cultivating emotional balance and psychospiritual transformation for a more meaningful and compassionate life. She is also the author of Mindful Motherhood: Practical Tools for Staying Sane During Pregnancy and Your Child’s First Year (New Harbinger/Noetic Books, 2009) as well as co-author of The Art and Science of Transformation in Everyday Life (New Harbinger/Noetic Books, 2008). Today we will also meet Cassandra’s colleague, Dean Radin. Dean Radin, Ph.D., is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and volunteer faculty at Sonoma State University in the Department of Psychology. For more than 20 years, Radin has been at the frontier of scientific research on the nature of consciousness. He has authored and co-authored over 200 articles, a dozen book chapters and three books including The Conscious Universe (HarperOne, 1997), Entangled Minds (Simon & Schuster, 2006), and the 2014 Silver Nautilus Book Award winner, Supernormal (Random House, 2013).
  • Day 4 - The Peaceful Eco-Preneur
    As an ecologist, entertainer, entrepreneur and author, Aaron Ableman produces educational entertainment programs to help at-risk children at an international level. Aaron has studied with Hopi elders, Oxford Rhodes scholars and spiritual leaders. He has also worked with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Cypress Hill, Joan Baez and many others. Many conferences and publications have featured Aaron, including National Geographic, the Los Angeles Times and San Francisco Examiner to name a few. Aaron is the CEO of Pacha’s Pajamas (, an online project telling stories of a little girl with big dreams.
  • Day 5 - The Peaceful Psychiatrist
    Dr. Dan Siegel is an award winning educator, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute. His work has been featured in an abundance of publications including TIME, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, NPR and Forbes. He has also been featured as a speaker with TEDx, Anderson Live, Dr. Phil in addition to lecturing for the King of Thailand, Pope John Paul II, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Google University and beyond. Dr. Siegel’s work focuses on examining the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes for the improvement of relationships and connections with communities. He’s authored internationally acclaimed articles, chapters, and books about developing a healthy mind and an integrated brain for more empathic relationships.   • Day 6 - The Peaceful Communicator
    Newt Bailey is a coach, a mediator and the founder of the Communication Dojo, an online space dedicated to helping people understand how to compassionately communicate. Using training based on the teachings of Marshall Rosenberg Ph.D., Newt helps executives and employees create better workplace environments with improved communication and conflict resolution skills. During his time at University College, Oxford, Newt practiced hands-on negotiation and meeting facilitation skills as the President of the Junior Common Room. He now lives and works in the Bay Area as a communication coach and facilitator.
  • Day 7 - The Peaceful Artist
    Kristian Kabuay is a San Francisco artist, born in the Philippines. He is a leading authority on the native Philippine script, an ancient writing system known as Baybayin. As a passionate artist, he developed a modern performance style called Tulang Kalis (Poetry of the Sword) to feature and share his love of the ancient script. Kristian is a long-time advocate of Baybayin and has spoken about it at universities, museums and festivals all over the world. He’s developed and launched his own company as homage to the script, featuring the writing in custom art pieces, books and apparel. Kristian is currently working on his third book.
  • Day 8 - The Peaceful Philosopher
    Somik Raha works at the intersection of strategy, technology innovation and organizational transformation as a product manager at SmartOrg. He is the founder of the open-source htmlparser project ( and has worked as an agile software development coach. During his time as a student earning a Ph.D. in Decision Analysis at Stanford University, Somik conducted research on values-based decision making to help organizations align their decisions with their core values. Somik is an active volunteer for ServiceSpace and also blogs for the Huffington Post.
  • Day 9 - The Peaceful Meditator
    Sally Fitts, LCSW has been a professional counselor since 1995 and a dedicated educator since the 1970’s. She focuses on empowering individuals to cultivate better relationships with self, others and one’s spiritual source. As a teacher of Raja Yoga Meditation and a facilitator at Anubhuti, Sally finds great honesty, respect and enthusiasm in openhearted approaches to find greater connection with the flow of life. Sally will be sharing some insights on Raja Yoga, a type of meditation that focuses on cultivating a pure connection to source with the mind.
